Personally I felt with the addition of 3D graphics the game actually moved away from it's roots. When players were represented by discs on the pitch it FELT like management. After all when a manager discusses tactics he would use a similar set up to show players what to do. Or was that just Andy Gray who did that ?

Bar Chart Manager (as we nicknamed it, due to the lack of footy graphics) sucked up a considerable amount of my time, I realised footy sims could be more entertaining.
Whilst CM was a well crafted (and ridiculously addictive) game, the 3D engine it lacked existed even back in the days of the ZX Spectrum, and I felt SI let us down in the long run.
Even LMA Manager on the PS2 had a 3D simulation.

Try here for an example of the ZX Spectrum game in all its emulated glory
